He spent the years 1734 to 1752 in Rome, where he studied <a href=\"/paintings/glossary/classical\">classical</a> landscapes in the tradition of <a href=\"/artists/claude\">Claude</a> and <a href=\"/artists/gaspard-dughet\">Gaspard Dughet</a>, as well as the dramatic paintings of <a href=\"/artists/salvator-rosa\">Salvator Rosa</a>. In Rome he was influenced by the contemporary Roman topographical painter <a href=\"/artists/giovanni-paolo-panini\">Giovanni Paolo Panini</a>.
